Child's Unfair School Schedule Has Dad 'Scared Out Of His Mind'

My kid takes "ELA/SS." Yours takes "Google Hacks" and "Creative Writing."

One eighth-grader takes “ELA/SS” classes. His counterpart takes ““Google Hacks” and “Creative Writing.”

Who has a better shot at success?

This is what has Newark public schools parent Frankie Adao up in arms about his son’s new schedule, which he says has got him “scared out of his freaking mind” on his blog, Chronicles of a Modern Dad.

“The difference a child receives in education from district to district is an amazing and stark reality of how different and uneven the educational playing field is for our children,” Adao wrote.

To illustrate his point, Adao posted his son’s schedule online [see photo 1].

The eighth-grade honor roll student’s classes include: Math, Science, STEM, ELA/SS, Computers and P.E.

For contrast, Adao then posted one of several class schedules that his fellow Facebook group members shared with him [see photo 2].

This student’s schedule included classes such as: Algebra, Google Hacks, Civics, Health, Media/Public Speaking, Sports Statistics, Creative Writing, Ceramics, STEAM, Band, Choir and Spanish.

“Jealousy came over me,” Adao wrote as he recalled how the schedules made him feel. “I wanted for my son what their kids had… fair and equal opportunity to a great education.”
