Chris Christie Responds To Story About Skipping Airport Security

Even out of office, the former governor can't escape attention.

UPDATE: Gov. Chris Christie denied that he intentionally tried to skip airport security at Newark Liberty International Airport on Thursday. He offered his denial in two tweets, calling it an "absolutely false story about my travel today."

Christie said he and the State Police detail were led to one entrance at the airport by Port Authority police officer. The Transportation Security Administration informed the Port Authority and State Police that this was "the wrong way to enter and directed us to another entrance where I was screened and admitted to the airport."

The PAPD officer "never denied me entry at either place ... He was a gentleman assisting my security detail," he said. "When he got the right info, he took me to the right place. Pure fiction."

ORIGINAL STORY: Even out of office, former Gov. Chris Christie can't escape attention – especially at the airport.

Christie avoided security check when he entered a terminal at Newark Liberty International Airport early Thursday, according to the Port Authority. The former governor, whose eight-year tenure ended Wednesday at 11:45 a.m., was stopped when he tried to access Terminal C through an entrance reserved for dignitaries, according to the Port Authority.

Sitting governors typically use the special entrance. Airport personnel also use the entrance when there is a backlog of people entering the terminal, according to the Port Authority.

Christie was with one State Police officer – typical detail for an ex-New Jersey governor – when he was redirected and escorted to the regular entrance used by commercial passengers, according to the Port Authority.

The Port Authority said Christie was fully cooperative when he was stopped.

Efforts to reach out to Christie were unsuccessful Thursday.

The Port Authority declined to say whether Christie should have known better when he attempted to enter the wrong entrance.
