Cop And Robber Have Gunfight Over Stolen Car In Essex County
The off-duty Irvington police officer spotted his daughter's stolen car being driven in Newark, prosecutors say.

An off-duty Irvington police officer exchanged gunfire with a man that allegedly stole his daughter’s car on Wednesday morning in Newark.
According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the officer was in the area of Stuyvesant Avenue and Abinger Place around 2:30 a.m. when he spotted a car he identified as his daughter’s stolen Jeep.
When the officer pulled across from the vehicle, multiple suspects jumped out of the car and fled.

According to prosecutors, as the officer was checking on the vehicle, a male approached him, and the two exchanged gunshots.
No one was injured in the gunfight, authorities stated.

At this time no arrests have been made and no suspects have been identified.
The investigation is being handled by the Professional Standards Bureau of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
