Cops Probe Fatal Shooting Near Basketball Court In Newark Park

Police found a man suffering from gunshot wounds in the park near a basketball court, authorities said.

NEWARK, NJ — A fatal shooting took place near a basketball court at a park in Newark on Thursday evening, authorities said.

Police officers responded to the area of Boys Park at Sussex Avenue and Duryea Street around 9 p.m. after getting a report about gunfire. The officers found a man suffering from gunshot wounds in the park near a basketball court, according to a statement from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Newark Department of Public Safety.

Emergency responders transported the man – later identified as Raymeer Shakim Tarver, 25, of Newark – to University Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 9:42 p.m.

The prosecutor’s office homicide task force, which includes Newark detectives, is investigating the shooting. Authorities said anyone with information can contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s tip line at 877-847-7432.
