NEWARK, NJ — Cory Booker is coming home to Newark.

On Saturday, April 13, the Democratic U.S. senator and 2020 presidential candidate will host his official “Hometown Kickoff” at Military Park in downtown Newark, his campaign team stated. The public event is the beginning of Booker’s “Justice for All Tour,” which was announced last month.

“The Hometown Kickoff will mark the beginning of a two-week tour across the United States that Cory will use to highlight his message of reigniting our sense of common purpose to build a more just country for the American people.”

The public event will take place at Military Park, 51 Park Place in Newark. Doors open at 9 a.m. Learn more about the event and how to RSVP here.

So far, Booker’s campaign has played up his Newark roots and time as the city’s mayor. The senator has said – if elected – he plans to “build a country where no one is forgotten, no one is left behind, where parents can put food on the table, where there are good paying jobs with good benefits in every neighborhood.”

Recent issues and causes that Booker has supported include the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), criminal justice reform, gun control, recreational marijuana legalization, "combating wealth inequality," investment in water and public infrastructure and "simplifying" student financial aid.

In a show of home-state strength and party unity, 52 New Jersey Democratic officials announced their endorsements of Booker for president in February. The high-profile list of supporters includes Gov. Phil Murphy, Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver and U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez.

However, others – including those from the progressive political spectrum – have criticized Booker's stances on hot-button issues such as possible military action in Venezuela, as well as his time as Newark mayor.

His opponents include President Donald Trump, who lambasted Booker for “running Newark into the ground” during his time at the city’s helm.
