COVID Death Update In Newark: Nursing Home, City Totals

How many deaths have been linked to the coronavirus in Newark? And how many of those took place in local nursing homes?

NEWARK, NJ — Authorities released the latest coronavirus death totals for Newark and its nursing homes on Thursday.

According to Essex County officials, the entire city of Newark has seen 6,462 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 520 deaths linked to the disease, an 8 percent fatality rate.

According to the New Jersey Department of Health, there were 142,704 confirmed cases statewide with 9,946 deaths, a 6.9 percent fatality rate.

NEWARK NURSING HOMES

According to the New Jersey Department of Health, Newark's nursing and retirement homes have seen 311 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 82 deaths linked to the disease: a 26.3 percent fatality rate.

The totals included:

  • Broadway House for Continuing Care - 19 cases, 1 death
  • Forest Hill Healthcare Center - 80 cases, 17 deaths
  • New Community Extended Care Facility - 66 cases, 12 deaths
  • Sinai Post-Acute Nursing & Rehab Center - 109 cases, 17 deaths
  • New Vista Nursing and Rehabilitation Center - 37 cases, 35 deaths

Statewide, there were 27,153 cases of the virus at nursing homes, retirement homes and other long-term care facilities, with 5,168 deaths linked to the disease: a 19 percent fatality rate.
