Deadly Shootings Claim 2 Lives In Newark To Start New Year
Police continue to investigate the fatal shootings, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said.
NEWARK, NJ — A pair of deadly shootings claimed two lives in Newark this week, authorities say.
A fatal shooting happened on the 100-block of Seymour Avenue at 9:17 p.m. on Monday, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
Another fatal shooting took place on the 300-block of Fairmount Avenue at 6:11 p.m. on Tuesday.

Police continue to investigate the shootings, a spokesperson with the prosecutor’s office told Patch on Wednesday. No additional information was immediately available.
The violent crime rate increased in Newark last year, but it continues to be a big improvement from past decades, new statistics show.

Newark saw a 23 percent decrease in murders, a 9 percent decrease in non-fatal shootings in 2024, according to local public safety officials. However, New Jersey’s largest city also saw a 9 percent rise in overall violent crime last year, including a 10 percent increase in robberies and an 11 percent jump in aggravated assaults.
