Dia De Portugal Festival Will Return To Newark: 2026 Event Schedule, Honorees

One of the biggest celebrations of Portuguese culture on the East Coast will return to New Jersey this spring. Here's what to expect.

NEWARK, NJ — One of the biggest celebrations of Portuguese culture on the East Coast will return to New Jersey’s largest city for 2026.

The annual Dia de Portugal will take place from June 12 to June 15 at Peter Francisco Park in Newark.

“Experience the vibrant spirit of Portugal in Newark's Ironbound,” organizers say. “From the iconic parade along Ferry Street to lively performances at Peter Francisco Park, immerse yourself in the heart of Portuguese-American heritage.​”

Fernando Grilo, president of the Dia de Portugal Newark Committee, said the celebration reflects the dedication of the community and its volunteers.

“Dia de Portugal in Newark is a source of great pride for our community,” Grilo said. “It is made possible by the dedication of our team, the support of local businesses and the commitment of volunteers who help keep our traditions alive.”

East Ward Councilman Michael Silva also highlighted the importance of the celebration.

“Being Portuguese is an essential part of my identity,” Silva said. “Dia de Portugal in Newark must remain a family celebration that honors our heritage and recognizes the contributions of the Portuguese community.”

2026 HONOREES

Earlier this week, the Dia de Portugal Newark Committee released biographies for this year’s honorees – each of whom has made “significant contributions” to the Portuguese and Luso-American community:

Grand Marshal - Carlos Farinhas

Carlos de Oliveira Farinhas was born in Murtosa, Portugal, on March 16, 1938, the son of Carlos da Silva Farinhas and Ana Henrique de Oliveira. From a very young age he learned the value of hard work and sacrifice, beginning work at the age of 12 in a bakery in his hometown.

In 1953, at just 15 years old, he emigrated to Venezuela, where he worked for approximately three years in the construction industry. In 1956 he moved with his family to the United States, settling in Newark, New Jersey, where he began building a new life. He attended evening classes at Lafayette School, where he learned English—an essential step in his integration and professional development within American society.

Determined to build his future, he began his career in the construction industry and became a member of Local Union 472. In 1977, together with a partner, he founded Scalfar Contracting Inc., which quickly established a strong reputation in the construction industry throughout New Jersey and New York.

A successful businessman, Mr. Farinhas has always maintained a strong connection to the Portuguese community of Ironbound. He has been actively involved with several community organizations, including Sport Marítimo Portuense, União Beneficente Portuense, Our Lady of Fátima Church—since its founding—and the Sporting Clube Português, where he has been a member since 1958.

Married to Maria Esmeralda Santos Silva and father of two children, Carlos and Maria Esmeralda, he retired in 2003, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, dedication, and service to the community that welcomed him.

Throughout his life he has received several recognitions, including a tribute from friends of St. James Hospital in 1998 and a commendation awarded in 2018.

Lifetime Achievement Award - Joe Rendeiro

Joe Rendeiro was born in Newark’s Ironbound neighborhood, the son of Portuguese immigrants from Murtosa, Maria (Zezinha) and António Rendeiro, who arrived in the United States in the late 1940s.

He grew up in a family deeply connected to the values of hard work, education, and community. He began his education at Ann Street School and later attended Essex Catholic High School. He continued his academic journey at Seton Hall University, where he earned a degree in Education. He later obtained a Master’s Degree in Administration and Supervision and Bilingual/Bicultural Education from Kean University.

Over the years, he continued his studies at prestigious institutions such as Fordham University and Teachers College at Columbia University.

His professional career was deeply defined by public service and education. In 1976 he began working in the Newark Public School system as an ESL teacher at Wilson Avenue School. He later served as Vice Principal of Ann Street School and eventually as Principal of Hawkins Street School, where he served for 16 years.

Throughout decades of dedication to education, he helped guide and inspire generations of young students within Newark’s diverse community.

In addition to his educational career, he has maintained a strong commitment to civic and community involvement. He has participated in the founding and leadership of several organizations connected to the Luso-American community, promoting civic engagement, education, and the preservation of Portuguese culture.

Married for more than four decades to his wife Dercilia, he is the proud father of two children and grandfather of two granddaughters. He continues to dedicate himself to his family, his community, and the values that have guided his life.

Woman of the Year - Maria Amélia Paiva

Maria Amélia Maio de Paiva was born on January 21, 1961. She holds a degree in History from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon and completed the academic coursework of a Master’s program in International Relations at the Institute of Social and Political Sciences (ISCSP).

She joined the Portuguese Diplomatic Service in 1988, after successfully passing the national examination for the position of embassy attaché.

Throughout her diplomatic career she has held several important positions within the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including Head of Division in the Department for South and Central America within the Directorate-General for Bilateral Relations, where she also served as acting head of the department.

Internationally, she has represented Portugal in several high-level diplomatic missions. She served as Ambassador of Portugal to Poland and Mozambique, and as non-resident ambassador to Mauritius, Seychelles, Eswatini, and Tanzania.

She also served as Consul General of Portugal in Toronto, Canada, and in Newark, United States.

In addition, she worked as Advisor for International Relations to the Civil Office of the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic and served as President of the Commission for Equality and Women’s Rights.

In 2021, she was promoted to the rank of Ambassador and Minister Plenipotentiary, First Class, a distinction recognizing her distinguished diplomatic career marked by professionalism, excellence, and dedication in representing the Portuguese State.

Posthumous Grand Marshal - Augusto “Augie” Acabou

Augusto Domingos “Augie” Acabou, a lifelong resident of Newark’s Ironbound neighborhood, tragically lost his life in the line of duty on July 5, 2023, while battling a fire as a firefighter for the City of Newark.

The son of a hardworking Portuguese family, Augie grew up surrounded by values of humility, dedication, and service to others. He graduated from East Side High School in 1996 and began his professional career in 1997 at HMH JFK Hospital, where he first worked in the laundry department and later as a security officer.

In 2013, he fulfilled one of his greatest dreams by graduating as a Newark firefighter, joining Class 43 and proudly serving with Engine 16.

Known for his joyful and generous spirit, Augie had an infectious personality. He was always ready to sing, play guitar, perform impressions, or share a joke to make those around him smile.

He was also passionate about sports, having played high school football, boxed, and participated in softball teams.

Friends and colleagues described him as selfless, inspiring, and deeply compassionate. Though he never sought recognition for his kindness, he left a profound impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

A devoted son to Manuel and Maria (Da Cunha) Acabou, beloved brother to João and Miguel, and loving partner to Cynthia Gulics, Augie’s memory continues to live on through his family, fellow firefighters, friends, and the entire community that honors his legacy of courage, generosity, and service.

Luso-American of the Year - Jorge Ventura

Jorge Ventura was born in Painho, in the municipality of Cadaval, Portugal, into a large family known locally as the Ventura family, also nicknamed “Cheira.”

At the age of 10 he moved with his parents to Caldas da Rainha, where he completed his industrial studies. During his youth he also distinguished himself in sports, playing organized football at age 13 for Futebol Clube das Caldas and participating in Mocidade Portuguesa until the age of 18.

At 19 he volunteered for the Portuguese Army Commandos training program in Lamego, and in 1969 he was deployed to Angola as a commando marine, completing the final phase of his training in an operational zone and serving for three years in the 22nd Company of Commandos.

In Luanda, he married Alda Ventura, his partner of 52 years, with whom he built a family.

In 1974, he emigrated to the United States with his family, initially settling in Newark and later moving to Rahway, where he has lived for more than three decades.

The couple has two children, Ricardo Ventura, a banker in Miami, and Rosemary Ruela, a teacher in Cranford, as well as four grandchildren.

Professionally, he has worked for more than 30 years with the Seabra Group, where he is responsible for managing the purchasing and distribution of Portuguese and Brazilian regional products.

In addition to his professional work, he has maintained a highly active civic and community life. He is the founder and long-time president of the Associação de Comandos, as well as a founder of the Associação Regional Caldense.

He has received several recognitions throughout his life, including the Medal of Honor from the City of Caldas da Rainha, and served as a Community Advisor appointed by the Ambassador of Portugal.

He also served as President of the Lions Club of Newark, was a founding member of the Luso American Veterans Monument in Peter Francisco Park, and for more than 40 years has played a central role in organizing Newark’s Dia de Portugal celebrations, particularly the annual parade.

Man of the Year - Luis Almeida

Luís Almeida was born in Pedralva, Anadia, known as the capital of Portugal’s Bairrada region, and emigrated to the United States in 1975 at the age of 13.

He began his studies at Wilson Avenue School and later graduated from Kearny High School in 1980. Determined to pursue higher education, he attended Drew University, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics in 1984, laying the foundation for a career in entrepreneurship and business management.

In 1987, he returned to Newark’s Ironbound district to work at Seabra’s Supermarket, gaining valuable experience in the food and retail industry.

A few years later, he decided to pursue his own entrepreneurial path and opened his first supermarket in Five Corners. In 1993, he founded the well-known Emporium 112 Supermarket, which quickly became a trusted establishment within the community.

With the essential support of his wife Angélica and their daughters, Luís Almeida built a successful family business rooted in values of hard work, dedication, and commitment to the community he serves every day.

Honorary Grand Marshal - Joaquim Rio

Joaquim Rio, a native of Ovar, Portugal, emigrated to the United States in 1969, after serving in the Portuguese Navy between 1965 and 1969.

He currently resides in Mamaroneck, New York, where he built both his family and professional life. He is married to Tina Rio and is the father of two children, Erica and Andrew.

Throughout his professional life he worked in several industries, including shipbuilding, landscaping, and later in the Public Works Department of the Village of Mamaroneck, where he served the community for many years.

Deeply connected to the Portuguese community, Joaquim Rio has found in the Dia de Portugal celebrations a meaningful way to maintain his connection to his roots, reunite with friends, and proudly remember the years he served in the Portuguese Navy and his youth in Portugal.

Over the years he has participated in numerous community events and gatherings in cities such as East Hartford, Connecticut; Newark; Kearny; and Elizabeth. He was also a member of the Portuguese Club of New Rochelle.

Receiving this distinction during the Dia de Portugal celebrations represents a special moment of recognition and a meaningful return to his roots.

Business of the Year - Allegro Restaurant

Allegro Seafood Grill, located in the heart of Newark’s Ironbound district, officially opened its doors on November 6, 2017, fulfilling the dream of its owner, Paulo Marralheiro.

Born in Valencia, Venezuela, into a family with deep roots in the restaurant industry, Paulo grew up surrounded by the traditions of gastronomy, hospitality, and hard work. After also living in Portugal, he emigrated to the United States in 1987 in search of new opportunities. Although he achieved success in other business ventures, his true passion remained in the restaurant industry—an inspiration deeply rooted in his family’s culinary tradition.

Today, Allegro Seafood Grill reflects that passion and strong connection to Portuguese heritage. The restaurant offers a refined dining experience that combines fresh seafood, traditional Portuguese cuisine, and a warm and elegant atmosphere.

The space stands out for its sophisticated décor, a striking saltwater aquarium, and an outdoor patio featuring palm trees, bamboo, and a cascading waterfall, creating a unique environment in the Ironbound district.

More than a restaurant, Allegro has become a gathering place for the local community and visitors alike—a space where Portuguese gastronomy, hospitality, and the spirit of community come together.

Student of the Year - Matthew Nunes

Matthew Nunes was born on November 9, 2007, and comes from a family of Portuguese heritage. He grew up in Newark, New Jersey, where he attended Lafayette Street School during his early education and currently studies at East Side High School.

During his early school years he faced several academic challenges but always demonstrated determination to overcome them. In the 8th grade, he made a strong commitment to improving his academic performance, a decision that marked a turning point in his educational journey.

In high school he distinguished himself through dedication and hard work, earning acceptance into the Early College Program at Essex County College, with encouragement from Vice Principal Mr. West. As a result of his efforts, Matthew will graduate from high school with an Associate’s Degree, equivalent to two years of college education, in addition to his high school diploma.

Among his recognitions are the Essex County “Unsung Heroes” Award as well as multiple academic honors and consistent placement on the Honor Roll.

Beyond his academic achievements, Matthew maintains a strong connection to his faith and community. He is actively involved with Our Lady of Fátima Church in Newark, where he enjoys helping with parish activities.

In his personal life he deeply values the close relationship he shares with his parents, siblings, and friends. One of his favorite pastimes is soccer, both playing and following the sport, especially when his favorite team, Sport Lisboa e Benfica, competes.

Since childhood he has also developed a passion for aviation, inspired by summer trips to Portugal with his family. In the future he hopes to move to Portugal and pursue a career in the aviation industry.

His story reflects perseverance and the ability to transform challenges into motivation, proving that one should never give up on their dreams.

Community Service Award - Capt. Maik Alexandre, 3rd Precinct

Captain Maik Alexandre was born at St. James Hospital in the Ironbound neighborhood of Newark. At approximately 18 months old, he moved with his parents to North Newark, where he grew up and began his academic journey.

He attended First Avenue School and also the Dom Diniz Portuguese School, maintaining a strong connection to Portuguese language and culture from an early age. He later attended Queen of Peace High School, after which he decided to pursue a career in public safety.

He enrolled at the Essex County Police Academy, where he first graduated as a correctional officer and served at the Caldwell Correctional Facility. In 2001 he attended the Newark Police Academy, completing his training that same year and officially beginning his career with the Newark Police Department.

Throughout his career, Captain Alexandre has served in multiple units and divisions within the department, gaining experience across many areas of the city. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2017 and Lieutenant in 2019.

In 2021 he served as Executive Officer of the Metro Precinct, and later of the Third Precinct in the Ironbound neighborhood. In 2023 he was promoted to Captain, assuming leadership of the Third Precinct, a position he currently holds while maintaining a close and constant relationship with the local community.

The son of Portuguese immigrants from Avenal, Parish of Vilar, Municipality of Cadaval, Portugal, he maintains a strong connection to his roots and regularly visits his family's hometown.
