Dozens Hurt After Bus From NJ Company Strikes Highway Overpass
The bus was carrying students who had just returned home from a spring break trip to Europe.
A coach bus from a New Jersey company carrying dozens of teenagers crashed into an overpass on the Southern State Parkway on Long Island Sunday night. At least 43 people were injured in the crash, with five of those injuries considered serious and one very serious, CBS New York reporter Lisa Rozner tweeted.
The crash occurred on the eastbound side of the parkway at Exit 18 – Eagle Avenue in Lakeview around 9:30 p.m., according to State Police. The parkway was shut in both directions near the scene.
It is unclear how serious those injuries are. Photos from the scene show the roof of the bus sheared off. The 58-passenger bus, which should not have been on the parkway, is owned by Irvington-based Journey Bus Lines.
