Dozens Lose Their Home After Fire At Newark Apartment Building

Newark authorities said that 32 adults and 13 children living in the building had to be relocated.

NEWARK, NJ — A two-alarm fire in Newark left dozens of people without a home on Monday, authorities said.

According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, the fire took place around 10 p.m. at a large, five-story apartment building at 80 Court Street.

“The initial responding fire companies located fire in the lower-level floors with the fire beginning to quickly spread to upper floors,” authorities stated. “When it was determined the fire was spreading through the walls, a second alarm was initiated, sending more than 70 firefighters to rescue residents and contain the fire.”

Firefighters evacuated the occupants of the building, putting the blaze under control at 11 p.m.

Two of the residents were treated for smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported, authorities said.

In total, 32 adults and 13 children living in the building had to be relocated, authorities said.

The Department of Public Safety’s arson unit is investigating the cause and origin of the fire.
