DWI Checkpoint At NJIT In Newark: See When, Where
When drunk drivers think the risk of being caught is high, their behavior changes immediately, NJIT public safety officials said.
NEWARK, NJ — Police officers at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in Newark will conduct a driving while intoxicated checkpoint during the evening of Nov. 24 and early morning of Nov. 25.
The DWI checkpoint will take place on a street along the west side of the university's Newark campus, administrators said.
According to the university, the operation will help deter impaired driving with the threat of arrest for those who pass through the checkpoint. It will also be a deterrent to people who have knowledge of the checkpoint, officials said.

Lt. Javier Duenas, a patrol and traffic commander at the NJIT Department of Public Safety, said the research is clear on the effect that highly visible enforcement has on deterring impaired driving: When drivers perceive the risk of being caught is high, their behavior changes immediately.
“The message is simple, direct, relevant and it works, having already influenced many citizens nationwide not to drink and drive,” Duenas said.
