DWI Checkpoint At NJIT In Newark This Week (See Where, When)
The checkpoint will be a deterrent for impaired drivers – and also for anyone who knows about it beforehand, officials said.
NEWARK, NJ — The Department of Public Safety at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) will conduct a driving while intoxicated checkpoint at its Newark campus this week, officials announced Wednesday.
The DWI checkpoint will take place on a street along the south side of the university's Newark campus during the evening of Thursday, April 17 and early morning of Friday, April 18.
NJIT spokespeople said the operation will serve as a deterrent by arresting impaired drivers who pass through the checkpoint. It will also be a general deterrent for people who know about the checkpoint beforehand.

According to Lt. Javier Duenas, a patrol and traffic commander at NJIT Public Safety, the research is clear on the effect that highly visible enforcement has on deterring impaired driving: when drivers perceive the risk of being caught is high, their behavior changes immediately.
“The message is simple, direct, relevant and it works, having already influenced many citizens nationwide not to drink and drive,” Duenas said. “As always, the safety and security of NJIT's campus and community is paramount.”
