DWI Checkpoint Planned Near NJIT In Newark (Here’s When)
It's a deterrent for impaired drivers – and a behavior-changing reminder for others, public safety officials say.
NEWARK, NJ — The Department of Public Safety at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) will conduct a driving while intoxicated checkpoint on a street along the west side of the university's Newark campus during the night of Friday, May 31 and early morning of Saturday, June 1.
According to a news release from NJIT, the operation will serve as a deterrent by arresting impaired drivers who pass through the checkpoint.
It will also be a deterrent to people who know about the checkpoint’s existence, administrators said.

According to Lt. Javier Duenas, a patrol and traffic commander at NJIT Public Safety, the research is clear: “highly visible enforcement” can help deter impaired driving.
When drivers perceive the risk of being caught is high, their behavior changes immediately, Duenas said. It’s the basis of the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” effort.

“The message is simple, direct, relevant and it works – having already influenced many citizens nationwide not to drink and drive,” Duenas said. “As always, the safety and security of NJIT's campus and community is paramount.”
