DWI Checkpoint Planned At NJIT In Newark: Here’s Where
Here's why authorities are making the checkpoint "highly visible" ahead of time.
NEWARK, NJ — Police at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in Newark are planning to hold a “driving while intoxicated” checkpoint on a street along the west side of the university's campus between the evening of Feb. 18 and the early morning of Feb. 19.
According to a statement from NJIT public safety officials, the operation will “serve as a specific deterrent by arresting impaired drivers who pass through the checkpoint and, more importantly, as a general deterrent to persons who have knowledge of the checkpoint.”
“The research is clear on the effect that highly visible enforcement has on deterring impaired driving: when drivers perceive the risk of being caught is high, their behavior changes immediately,” NJIT administrators said. “This is the basis of the ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ crackdown.”

“The message is simple, direct, relevant and it works, having already influenced many citizens nationwide not to drink and drive. As always, the safety and security of NJIT's campus and community is paramount.”
