Essex County College Student Named To All USA-NJ Academic Team

The Irvington resident came to the United States from Cameroon in 2014, administrators say.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — An Irvington resident and Essex County College student was recently named to the All USA-New Jersey Community College Academic Team.

According to a college news release, Yannick Kenfack will be recognized next year by the New Jersey Council of County Colleges and state Legislature on Phi Theta Kappa Day, and will also be eligible for national scholarships through the All USA-Coca Cola Foundation.

“Yannick, of Irvington, serves as president of the College's Alpha Theta Theta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. He came to the United States from Cameroon in 2014. Starting at Essex the following year, Yannick intended to transfer to a four-year school after one semester. But it didn't take him long to realize that first earnings an associate degree, while taking advantage of lower tuition, was the best way to go both financially and academically.

“Carrying a 3.78 grade point average, Yannick wants to pursue medical school. Schools high on his transfer list are Rutgers University-New Brunswick and Boston University.

“One aspect of his Essex County College life he is most proud is his work as Phi Theta Kappa president. In particular, he is proud of creating a member of the month and semester program.”
