In Essex County: Garbage Truck Kills Pedestrian

Prosecutor: Driver was backing up to dump a load when he struck and killed a 58-year-old Newark man.

A garbage truck struck and killed a 58-year-old pedestrian in Newark on Wednesday.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the incident happened around 5 a.m. on Doremus Avenue, when the driver of a Mack Truck hit Earl Wheeler, 58, of Newark.

Authorities stated that the driver was trying to back into a garbage bay to dump a load when he hit Wheeler.

Wheeler was pronounced dead at 4:48 a.m.

Prosecutors stated that the driver of the truck remained on the scene, called for emergency services and has been cooperative.

No charges have been filed as of Wednesday afternoon, but the investigation is active and ongoing.
