ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — They just wanted to walk their dogs, prosecutors say.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has released an update about a case involving a sex assault on a minor and an attack on a 51-year-old woman that took place in Irvington nearly two years ago.

Earlier this month, a jury returned a guilty verdict against Caream Davis, 46, of Newark. He was convicted on two counts of first-degree aggravated sexual assault, one count of first-degree kidnapping, one count of second-degree aggravated assault, one count of third-degree aggravated assault, one count of third-degree making terroristic threats, one count of third-degree criminal restraint, and two counts of third-degree endangering the welfare of a child.

Prosecutors said the woman was walking her dogs early that morning. Davis then approached and punched the woman from behind, knocking her down. He then kept punching her while she was still on the ground.

Davis eventually got up walked a few blocks away, where a juvenile was walking his dog. He spoke with the minor, then grabbed the youth by the neck, choked him, carried him to the side of a nearby building and sexually assaulted him – while also threatening to kill him, prosecutors said.

Davis fled New Jersey after the attacks. He was apprehended in Richmond, Virginia on June 5 by the U.S. Marshals Service and Richmond Police Department, and extradited to New Jersey later that week.

Davis is scheduled to be sentenced on July 20. He faces a prison sentence ranging from 30 years to life, prosecutors said.

“The victims went outside that morning to simply walk their dogs,” Assistant Prosecutor Logan Teisch said.

“They could not have imagined how that ordinary task would change their lives forever,” Teisch added, crediting the victims for testifying in court against Davis.

County prosecutors also credited the Irvington Police Department and the FBI for aiding with the investigation.
