Ex-Newark Councilman Will Have Street Renamed In His Honor
The City of Newark will honor a longtime former council member by renaming a street after him: "Augusto Amador Street."

NEWARK, NJ — The City of Newark will honor a longtime former council member by renaming a street after him: “Augusto Amador Street.”
A ceremonial dedication will honor former East Ward councilman Augusto Amador at the corner of Pulaski Street and Lafayette Street at 11 a.m. on June 9.
Amador represented the East Ward for more than two decades before announcing he would not seek re-election.

“Augusto Amador was the East Ward councilman for 24 years and always worked to defend the interests of the neighborhood residents,” said councilman Michael Silva, who proposed the street naming request.
“His work was also decisive for the Portuguese community's recognition in our city and state,” Silva added.

According to a news release:
“Augusto Amador was the first Luso-American elected to serve on the Newark Board of Education in 1993, the first Luso-American appointed to the position of Deputy Mayor in 1997 and the first Luso-American elected to Newark Municipal Council in 1998 where he served a record six terms until his retirement in 2022. Amador was born and raised in Murtosa, Portugal, and came to the United States at a young age. This street naming allows Newark and Ironbound to recognize and honor the work and accomplishments of Augusto Amador.”
