Ex-Rutgers Student Busted, Allegedly Referenced Shooting In Video

Heightened security was reported across the university's Newark campus on Thursday, according to reports.

Heightened security was reported across the Rutgers University campus in Newark on Thursday after an email sent by a former student referenced a shooting, according to police.

The email reportedly came from a former student at the Rutgers-Newark Law School and “included language that could be interpreted as threatening,” nj.com reported a school official as saying.

Patrick Kelly, 28, of Harrison was arrested by Rutgers University police after he sent a message to several students at Rutgers Law School in Newark that mentioned "mass violence in schools," "extreme group stalking" and mental health, according to an email obtained by NorthJersey.com.

Rutgers acknowledged that there is possible link between a one-hour, 20 minute video and the email, according to nj.com.

In the video, the former student identifying himself as Patrick Kelly airs his grievances with the university, including what he says is poor security, according to nj.com. He begins the video by saying, “Lives will be lost if you don’t act.”

"If I actually was a crazy person and I got access to somebody else's gun, at least 50 people would have died," Kelly said in the video, as reported by northjersey.com.

Kelly was arrested at 11:30 a.m. Thursday after "alluding to potential threats," Chancellor Nancy Cantor said in a statement reported by the publication. He was charged with two counts of making terroristic threats and one count of initiating or circulating a false report of warning involving an impending emergency.
