Expect Delays At Bridges, Tunnels Between NJ, NY This Week

NEW JERSEY — Drivers who use the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s five major bridges and tunnels might want to pencil in some extra drive time this week, authorities say.

On Friday, lane closures and service changes will kick off at the George Washington Bridge, Holland Tunnel, Lincoln Tunnel, Goethals Bridge and Outerbridge Crossing (see the list below).

The lane closures and changes will last until Thursday, Aug. 31 at some crossings. Port Authority officials are advising motorists to plan ahead and consider additional travel time.

Here’s what is in store, according to the Port Authority.

George Washington Bridge

• From 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, to 5 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, one eastbound approach lane on the upper level will be closed.
• From 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, to 5 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, one westbound departure lane on the upper level will be closed.
• From 11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, to 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, two eastbound lanes on the upper level Trans-Manhattan Expressway will be closed.
• From 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, to 8 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 27, two eastbound approach lanes on the upper level will be closed.
• From 11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, to 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, all westbound lanes on the lower level will be closed. New Jersey-bound motorists should use the upper level.
• From 11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, to 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, one westbound lane of the upper level Trans-Manhattan Expressway will be closed.
• From 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, to 8 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 27, three eastbound lanes on the upper level will be closed.
• From 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, to 8 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 27, the ramp from the southbound Palisades Interstate Parkway to eastbound lanes on the upper level will be closed. Motorists can exit at Hudson Terrace.
• From 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, to 8 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 27, two eastbound lanes on the upper level Trans-Manhattan Expressway to the Alexander Hamilton Bridge will be closed.

Holland Tunnel

• From 11:59 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, to 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, the New Jersey-bound tube of the Holland Tunnel will be closed due to ongoing Superstorm Sandy-related repairs. The New York-bound tube remains open during work.
• From 11 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27, to 5:30 a.m. the following morning, and on multiple overnights through 2025, the New Jersey-bound tube of the Holland Tunnel will be closed due to ongoing Superstorm Sandy-related repairs. • From Sunday, Aug. 27, through Thursday, Aug. 31, from 11 p.m. each night to 5 a.m. the following morning, one eastbound lane will be closed.

Lincoln Tunnel

• On Saturday, Aug. 26, from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m., the south tube will be closed for maintenance. New York-bound traffic will be redirected to the center tube. New Jersey-bound traffic in the north tube will not be affected.
• On Monday, Aug. 28, from 12:01 a.m. to 5 a.m., the north tube will be closed. New Jersey-bound traffic will be redirected to the center tube. New York-bound traffic in the south tube will not be affected. Vehicles on 10th Avenue must use the right lane on 40th Street for tunnel access to New Jersey.
• On Monday, Aug. 28, and again on Tuesday, Aug. 29, from 11 p.m. each night to 5 a.m. the following morning, the north tube will be closed. New Jersey-bound traffic will be redirected to the center tube. New York-bound traffic in the south tube will not be affected. Vehicles on 10th Avenue must use the right lane on 40th Street for tunnel access to New Jersey.

Goethals Bridge

• From 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, to 5 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, one eastbound left lane will be closed.
• From 10 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, to 5 a.m. Friday, Sept. 1, one eastbound left lane will be closed from Brunswick Avenue to the bridge.
• From 10 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, to 5 a.m. Friday, Sept. 1, one eastbound left lane will be closed from the bridge to before Forest Avenue.

Outerbridge Crossing

• From 11:59 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, to 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, one westbound right lane will be closed.
• From Monday, Aug. 28, through Wednesday, Aug. 30, from 10 p.m. each night to 5 a.m. the following morning, two eastbound left toll lanes will be closed.
• From Monday, Aug. 28, through Thursday, Aug. 31, from 10 p.m. each night to 5 a.m. the following morning, one westbound right lane and one eastbound right lane will be closed.
• From 10 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, to 5 a.m. Friday, Sept. 1, two eastbound right toll lanes will be closed except at the Page Avenue exit.
