Fatal, Fiery Crash Is ‘Sad Day’ For Newark, Official Says

A tanker truck and two cars collided in Newark. "It's a sad day when something like this happens," the city's public safety director said.

NEWARK, NJ — A fatal, fiery crash involving a small tanker truck and two passenger vehicles took place in Newark on Tuesday, authorities said.

The crash took place around 11:50 a.m. at Bergen Street and Madison Avenue, according to the Newark Department of Public Safety.

The tanker truck and one of the cars were engulfed in flames after the crash. About 40 Newark firefighters responded to the scene and put the fire under control at 12:11 p.m., authorities said.

The male driver of one of the passenger vehicles died. The tanker truck driver was treated at the scene and no other injuries have been reported, a Newark police spokesperson said.

The Newark Fire Division’s Arson Unit, the Newark Police Division and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office have launched an investigation.

“Our deepest condolences are extended to the decedent’s family and to the other victims involved,” Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said. “It’s a sad day when something like this happens.”
