Fatal Shooting In Newark; ‘Illegal Guns’ To Blame, Official Says

Newark Public Safety Director: "This is another example of a senseless loss of life due to the prevalence of illegal guns on our streets."

NEWARK, NJ — A fatal shooting that took place in Newark on Monday is being blamed on the “prevalence of illegal guns.”

Police responded to the 300-block of West Kinney Street at 7 p.m. to find Avent Holston, 27, of Newark, wounded by gunfire, according to joint statement from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Newark Department of Public Safety.

Holston was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:41 p.m., authorities said.

A police investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made as of Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

“This is another example of a senseless loss of life due to the prevalence of illegal guns on our streets,” Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said.
