Fatal Stabbing Outside Newark ShopRite, East Orange Man Dies: ECPO

A fatal stabbing took place in the parking lot of a ShopRite supermarket in Essex County, authorities say.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — A fatal stabbing took place in the parking lot of a ShopRite supermarket in Essex County on Monday night, authorities say.

The stabbing – which took place in Newark – claimed the life of an East Orange resident, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Newark police responded to the ShopRite parking lot on the 200-block of Springfield Avenue at 7:17 p.m. Officers found Rodney J. Mayes, 56, of East Orange, with stab wounds. He was transported to University Hospital in Newark, where he died from his injuries, prosecutors said.

The stabbing took place after a verbal dispute with another man, who fled the scene, authorities said.

No arrests have been made as of Tuesday morning. A police investigation continues, prosecutors said.
