Fire Forces 32 Newark Residents Out Of Homes, Injures Captain: Officials

Newark firefighters managed to knock down the flames, but not before 32 people had to be relocated to local shelters, authorities say.

NEWARK, NJ — A fire at a five-story building on Garside Street in Newark on Monday night left 32 residents without a place to sleep and injured a Newark Fire Department captain, authorities say.

Newark firefighters arrived at the two-alarm blaze at 68 Garside Street around 7:30 p.m., finding that the fire was concentrated at the top floor cockloft of the mixed-use building, the Newark Public Safety Department stated.

Firefighters managed to knock down the flames, but not before 32 people had to be relocated to local shelters with the support of the American Red Cross, authorities said.

A Newark Fire Department captain suffered non-life threatening injuries while combating the blaze, officials said.

The Newark Fire Division’s arson unit is conducting an investigation into the cause of the conflagration, authorities said.
