Fire At Newark Senior Home Kills 72-Year-Old Man: Prosecutor

Newark firefighters found the victim unresponsive at the scene, authorities said.

NEWARK, NJ — A fire at a senior home in Newark claimed the life of a 72-year-old man last weekend, authorities said.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, the fatal fire took place at the Saint Mary’s Villa senior housing building on Sanford Avenue on Saturday afternoon.

Newark firefighters arriving at the scene found an “unresponsive” man in one of the apartments in the complex. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:53 p.m., prosecutors said.

Authorities later identified the deceased man as William Fulmore, 72, of Newark.

Firefighters contained the blaze to a single apartment in the building. The cause is under investigation by the prosecutor’s crime scene investigations bureau, which includes detectives from the Newark police and fire departments, authorities stated.
