Adults can take the plunge with free swim classes at Newark's John F. Kennedy Aquatic Center starting at the end of the month.
Beginning Wednesday, Sept. 26, the "Learn to Swim" class will be held once a week on Wednesday or Fridays from 5:15-6 p.m., or on Saturdays from 10:15-11 a.m. The aquatic center is located at 211 West Kinney St. (entrance on Howard Street) in the city's Central Ward.
The class “Introduction to Water for the Fearful Adult” is geared toward Newark residents who are not familiar with swimming and water activities.

Registration forms for the classes can be picked up at the Kennedy Aquatic Center, until Wednesday, September 26. Slots for the classes are first-come, first-served, and space is limited, so residents are encouraged to register early.
Participants must bring a swimsuit, towel, shower shoes, and a bathing cap, which is required for anyone whose hair is more than two inches long. While the aquatic center provides lockers, it does not provide locks – participants should bring their own locks to secure their personal property.

"Swimming is a great sport and a form of exercise that can be enjoyed at any age," said Mayor Booker in a statement. "It is also a great skill to know and the ability to swim may save a life. Many Newark residents are not familiar with or comfortable in the water, and this class will help them overcome their fears. I urge all Newark adult residents to take advantage of this free program, and learn to swim this fall."
