The New Jersey Council for the Humanities (NJCH) is pleased to announce a new partnership with the Clemente Course in the Humanities to bring free college-level humanities courses to veterans and military-connected families in and around Newark.

Founded in 1995, the Clemente Course offers transformative educational experiences for adults facing economic hardship and adverse circumstances, allowing them to receive college credit for academic work pursued in a supportive, community-building environment. Clemente’s free humanities coursework has reached over 10,000 students around the world to date.

The Clemente Veterans’ Initiative Newark, now in its third year, focuses especially upon serving veterans who are challenged by the transition from soldier to civilian, and who are looking for an engaged community of peers to explore themes of war and reconciliation through great moments of history, art, philosophy, and literature. The NJCH-CVIN collaboration will provide funding for the course itself, as well as cultural enrichment and community-building opportunities for enrolled students.

“NJCH is grateful for the service of New Jersey’s veterans and we are very glad to be able to support a course that will allow the veterans who participate to expand our understandings of classic humanistic works,” said NJCH Executive Director Carin Berkowitz, Ph.D.

“The Cornwall Center at Rutgers-Newark is delighted to host our third CVI course,” said CVIN Academic Director Charity Anderson, Ph.D. “It builds on the Center’s commitment to be a generative resource for the community, and it allows us to collaborate with veterans and military-connected civilians, populations that are often overlooked and underserved.”

Clemente Veterans’ Initiative Newark is now accepting applications for the 2023 class. Veterans as well as family members and friends of veterans are welcome to apply.
