Free Food Giveaway In Newark For In-Need Residents: See Details

The City of Newark will hold another "drive-up and go" food distribution event for local residents on Wednesday. Here's what to know.

NEWARK, NJ — The City of Newark will hold another “drive-up and go” food distribution event for local residents this week.

Newark officials have been holding free giveaways of food for in-need residents at rotating locations across the city. The latest event will take place at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at the intersection of Wakeman and Arlington avenues.

According to a city advisory, 1,000 boxes of food will be available at the event. The packages will include fruit, vegetables and chicken.

Cars must enter at Summer Avenue and Arlington Avenue. Walk-ups are welcome at Wakeman Avenue and Arlington Avenue. For more information, call 973-733-3274 or visit newarknj.gov.

Police said the following roads will be closed the day of the event from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.:

  • Arlington Avenue between Summer Avenue and Broadway
  • Wakeman Avenue between May Street and Nursery Street

Drivers are advised to anticipate delays and to plan alternate routes, authorities said.
