Free Training In Newark Helps Women Get Construction Jobs

NJ needs more female laborers, carpenters, plumbers, pipefitters and construction workers, officials say. Here's how to make it happen.

NEWARK, NJ — New Jersey needs more female laborers, carpenters, plumbers, pipefitters and construction workers, officials say… and now there’s a new pathway to help make it happen.

According to a municipal notice posted Monday, the City of Newark is teaming up with the Elizabeth Development Company (EDC) and the New Jersey Department of Labor to provide local women with free classes, pre-testing, training and placement in construction careers.

Newark officials wrote that unionized construction workers can earn $100,000 after five years on the job. As part of the program, the EDC will pay up to $600 for the costs of apprenticeship tests, OSHA 30 and union initiation fees.
