Free Yoga Classes for Newark Residents

Program will be held Fridays and Saturdays until Nov. 30

Break out the yoga mats!

The city of Newark is now offering free yoga lessons on Friday and Saturdays at John F. Kennedy Aquatic Center and St. Peter's Recreation Center, respectively.

The program, ongoing until Nov. 30, is open to Newark residents ages 14 and up. The classes will be taught by , which has locations in Newark and Bloomfield.

Classes are geared toward people unfamiliar with yoga. It will begin with fundamentals of strengthening legs for stability and confidence, opening tight shoulder and developing balance. It will also cover body alignment, using yoga to address injuries or pre-existing medical conditions, like high-blood pressure or chronic lower back pain.

Yoga philosophies of non-violence and cleanliness will also be incorporated so they can be applied to daily living.

"We are making healthy lifestyles and good nutrition habits a high priority for this administration and our residents," said Mayor Booker in a press release. "Yoga is a form of exercise that strengthens the body, mind, and spirit. I urge Newark’s residents to get involved with this yoga program. Let’s move toward a stronger and healthier Newark!"

Founded in 2004, Lotus Yoga has trained more than 100 yoga teachers and . The Newark location is at 460 Washington St.

Advanced registration is encouraged. Registration forms can be found at any of the two participation recreation centers.
