Garbage Truck Hits, Kills 72-Year-Old Newark Pedestrian: Police

A garbage truck struck and killed a 72-year-old man in Newark, authorities said.

NEWARK, NJ — A garbage truck struck and killed a 72-year-old pedestrian in Newark last week, authorities said.

A garbage truck hit a 72-year-old man near Lincoln Park and Pennsylvania Avenue on Friday, Dec. 7. The victim, whose name was withheld pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead at 1:38 p.m., according to a joint statement from Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose.

The truck and driver were located and the driver was questioned, authorities said.

An investigation is ongoing, but no charges have been filed, police initially said.

Authorities later charged Napoleon Tolbert, 53, with leaving the scene of a fatal crash and failure to render aid to an injured victim.
