Is God Is Turns Female Rage Into Something Dark, Funny, and Unforgettable

A revenge story layered with grief, survival, and identity.

There’s something almost deceptive about Is God Is. You walk in expecting a thriller, maybe even a revenge story, but what unfolds is something far more layered. It’s darkly funny, emotionally chaotic, uncomfortable at times and surprisingly human underneath all the violence and absurdity.

From the moment the twins hit the screen, the film locks you in. Their chemistry carries the entire story. One sister is impulsive, angry, and unintentionally hilarious in the way she embraces revenge with almost no hesitation. The other tries to hold onto morality, questioning how far is too far, until grief and loyalty slowly pull her deeper into the same rage. Watching that tension play out between them is what makes the film work so well.

And honestly, some of the funniest moments come from the film’s self-awareness. The subtitles revealing the characters’ inner thoughts had the entire theater laughing out loud. Even the now-iconic white sock filled with rocks somehow becomes both ridiculous and memorable at the same time. The humor catches you off guard constantly, but that’s also what makes the heavier themes hit harder.

I laughed, sat in silence, and left thinking about female rage, grief, survival, and identity in a completely different way. This is one of those stories that doesn’t just entertain you… it confronts you. Whew.

Beneath all the chaos, Is God Is is really about inherited trauma, survival, and what happens when pain goes unaddressed for too long. The film explores female rage in a way that feels messy, honest, and unapologetic. Not polished. Not softened. Just raw. It asks what revenge looks like when people feel abandoned by everyone who was supposed to protect them.

What makes the film stand out is that it never tries to force you to feel one thing. You laugh, then immediately feel uncomfortable for laughing. You sympathize with the characters even when they’re making terrible decisions. It constantly shifts between satire, grief, and violence in a way that somehow still feels intentional.

At its core, Is God Is is about two young women trying to reclaim power after a lifetime of pain, and that emotional foundation keeps the story grounded even in its most outrageous moments.

It’s strange, sharp, funny, unsettling, and unforgettable in the best way. Definitely one of those films that stays in your head long after the credits roll.

Is God Is releases in theaters May 15. Catch it at your local theater.
