The city of Newark hosted a gun buyback program this weekend, with participants able to turn in weapons for a payment of up to $250, no questions asked.
The local buyback follows more recent buybacks held elsewhere in essex County and across the state.
The firearms will be colected by a charity, "Jewelry for a Cause," which melts down the weapons and repurposes them as jewelry for a line known as the caliber Collection. Proceeds from the sale of the jewelry will help fund future weapons buybacks.
