Hanukkah Chocolate Coins Recalled

The coins were distributed by the Newark-headquartered company Manischewitz to stores mainly in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

The recall was initiated after the company was made aware that a "limited number" of bags labeled as "dark chocolate coins" contained milk chocolate coins, officials said.

NEWARK, NJ — Bags of Manischewitz dark chocolate coins for Hanukkah have been recalled by the company due to allergy concerns because they may contain undeclared milk, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Friday.

The coins were distributed by the Newark-headquartered company to stores nationwide — predominately in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut — during the weeks of Sept. 26 through Nov. 28, according to officials.

The recall was initiated after the company was made aware that a "limited number" of bags labeled as "dark chocolate coins" contained milk chocolate coins, officials said.

All dairy milk chocolate coins are wrapped in gold foil within a blue netting and all non-dairy dark chocolate coins are wrapped in silver foil within a red netting, according to officials.

Only packages with the lot code 2283 may potentially have gold dairy coins in the "dark-chocolate" tagged bag, officials said.

People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk may suffer a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the chocolates, according to the FDA.

The company had received no reports of illness or injury as of Friday and all retailers who purchased the lot code were notified of the recall and instructed to remove any potentially affected product from their shelves, officials said.

Officials are urging anyone who purchased the products in the recall to return the chocolates for a refund and get medical help if they consumed them and have an adverse reaction.
