Help Is A Text Message Away: Homelessness In Newark
People who come across someone in need can send a text to this hotline – and help will soon be on the way, officials say.
NEWARK, NJ — There’s a new way to spread empathy and help a fellow Newark resident who is experiencing homelessness: a texting hotline.
Newark, the state’s most populated city, has been struggling with homelessness for decades. It’s a problem that the city has been battling with a range of new tools and strategies – which is paying off big time, officials say. Now, people living and visiting Newark are welcome to pitch in and help the campaign to eliminate homelessness in the Brick City, officials say.

According to a recent social media post:
“The Mayor's Office of Homeless Services now has a texting hotline for the public to use to help any homeless person on the street! Text ‘PATH HOME’ to (855-11) if you see an unhoused person in Newark who needs non-emergency assistance. Your text message will be sent to outreach providers who will locate the person in need and offer services.”
