UPDATED: 'Hostage' Situation In Newark Draws SWAT Response

The new owners took refuge on the rooftop of the building after being confronted by an armed homeless man, police say.

NEWARK, NJ — Newark SWAT officers responded to what authorities termed a "hostage incident" at a local warehouse on Friday afternoon, authorities say.

The incident took place at 451 Frelinghuysen Avenue, Newark Department of Public Safety officials stated.

RLS Media reported that the incident began around 1 p.m. when Newark police were called to the scene on reports of a person with a gun inside a building.

Newark officials provided the following statement around 4 p.m.:

"Officers from the Newark Emergency Services Unit rescued two individuals who took refuge on the rooftop of 451 Frelinghuysen Avenue after being confronted by an armed homeless man residing in the building... The victims, who are the new owners of the property, are unharmed... The suspect has been apprehended and a BB gun was recovered from the building."
