Hudson County Students Embark On Volunteer Project In Newark

The Hudson County teens volunteered at various sites in Newark, including a transitional housing facility for homeless families.

JERSEY CITY, NJ — Ten New Jersey high school students from Saint Peter’s Prep in Jersey City recently spent a week volunteering with inner city children, job seekers, seniors and formerly homeless as part of a cooperation with community development nonprofit New Community Corporation of Newark.

As part of their community service project, the students, accompanied by two chaperones from the all-male prep school, lodged at one of New Community’s eight residential buildings that provide affordable housing for seniors and disabled residents.

Starting on July 24, the teens volunteered at various sites in Newark, including Harmony House, New Community’s transitional housing facility for homeless families, as well as at the two early learning centers, Extended Care Facility, Automotive Training Center, Adult Learning Center and Youth Services.

“The students of Saint Peter’s Prep had a unique opportunity to glimpse of some of the real challenges of working, raising a family and building community in Newark,” New Community CEO Richard Rohrman said. “My hope is that this experience will serve to inspire and inform these bright young minds.”
