Ironbound Community Corporation CEO Sworn In as Commissioner

The Ironbound Community Corporation (ICC) is proud to announce that today, Hazel Applewhite, CEO of ICC, was officially sworn in as a Commissioner on the City of Newark’s Equitable Growth Advisory Commission. Hazel’s appointment follows an invitation from Mayor Ras J. Baraka, recognizing her steadfast leadership, advocacy, and dedication to advancing equity across the city.

The swearing-in marks a significant moment not only for Hazel but for the entire ICC community. As Commissioner, Hazel will work alongside other civic leaders to develop strategies, recommendations, and policies that promote equitable economic growth, address systemic disparities, and ensure that all Newark residents—regardless of neighborhood—have access to opportunity.

Under Hazel’s leadership, ICC has expanded its reach and impact, offering a wide range of services—from early childhood education and youth development programs to immigrant rights advocacy and environmental justice initiatives. Her appointment reinforces ICC’s role as a trusted partner in shaping Newark’s future.
