Irvington Pharmacy Turns 100, Gets Round Of Applause From County

Abels Pharmacy on Grove Street was founded in 1923, and has been serving Irvington customers ever since.

IRVINGTON, NJ — Essex County officials recently gave a round of applause to a pharmacy in Irvington in tribute to its 100th anniversary.

According to a news release from Essex County, Abels Pharmacy at 635 Grove Street was founded by Abraham and Elizabeth Abels in 1923. Their son and his wife – Norman and Rona Abels – took over the business in 1947.

Marc Greene, who has worked at the pharmacy for 50 years, purchased the business in the 1980s. Meanwhile, Rona Abels, who is 97, continues to work at the pharmacy every day.

Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo Jr. and Tony Vauss Jr., the son of Irvington Mayor Tony Vauss, were among those on hand to wish the pharmacy good luck and congratulations last week.
