Khem Fest In Newark Will Spotlight Films, Comics From Black Creators
A celebration of animation, gaming and comic books that spotlights Black creators is returning to New Jersey's largest city for 2024.

NEWARK, NJ — A celebration of animation, gaming and comic books that spotlights Black creators is returning to New Jersey’s largest city for 2024.
Khem Fest 2024 will take place on Saturday, Sept. 28 at Heritage Hall, 54 Halsey Street in Newark. For more information or to purchase tickets, click here.
Now in its 10th year, the festival gives fans of “AfroFuturism” a chance to check out panel discussions, keynote presentations, interactive workshops, live performances, gaming tournaments and art exhibits – all of which spotlight Black creators.

“Through a range of events, panels, and activities, we hope to inspire, educate, and empower individuals while fostering a sense of community and appreciation for Black animation, gaming, and comic book creators,” said festival organizer Naseed Gifted, the writer of “P.B. Soldier.”

Here’s what to expect this year, according to a news release:
“At the heart of the festival is the Khem Animation Film Festival (KAFF) presenting a curated selection of over 14 animated short films from talented creators hailing from every corner of the globe. Expect to be captivated and inspired by the creativity and storytelling prowess on display.
“In recognition of the incredible contributions by black women to the animation and gaming, KAFF Replay will feature a spotlight event titled ‘Breaking Boundaries: Black Women in Animation and Gaming.’ This panel discussion will offer attendees a chance to gain insights and perspectives from leading female voices in the industry.
“For those fascinated by the intersection of anime and hip hop, the ‘Animated Visions Showcase’ promises to be a unique and engaging experience. Participants will delve into the captivating world of Afrofuturism as animators converge at Khem Fest’s Heritage Hall to pitch their animated visions. As industry members watch, connections spark, and the promise of exposure awaits.
“Khem Fest also places a spotlight on the art and craft of animation. The festival proudly presents a seminar on Animation Film Development, inviting renowned industry professionals to share their knowledge and expertise. Attendees will gain a valuable understanding of the intricacies and innovations involved in creating immersive animation experiences.
“As a celebration of technological innovation, KAFF Replay includes ‘The Future is Black: Tesla Light Show’ is a mesmerizing and immersive experience that combines the cutting-edge technology of Tesla with the allure of Wakanda. Step into a world of wonder as you witness a spectacular display of lights, music, and innovation, showcasing the convergence of advanced engineering and the rich cultural heritage of Wakanda.
