Khem Fest In Newark Will Uplift Black Creators: Comics, Anime, Gaming

The 2023 Khem Fest will include an animation film fest, video game workshops and a tribute to Black women in comic books.

NEWARK, NJ — A celebration of animation, gaming and comic books from Black creators will take place in Newark when the 2023 Khem Fest returns to the city.

Now in its ninth year, the festival gives fans of “AfroFuturism” a chance to check out panel discussions, keynote presentations, interactive workshops, live performances, gaming tournaments and art exhibits – all of which spotlight Black creators.

Meanwhile, up-and-coming professionals get the opportunity to showcase their work, discuss their experiences and connect with a diverse audience.

This year's festival will be held at Citiplex 12 Newark, 360-394 Springfield Avenue, from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23 and Sunday, Sept. 24. Learn more or purchase tickets here.

“We are thrilled to present the 9th Annual Khem Fest, an event that celebrates the richness and diversity of Afrofuturism,” said festival organizer Naseed Gifted, the writer of “P.B. Soldier.”

“Through a range of events, panels, and activities, we hope to inspire, educate, and empower individuals while fostering a sense of community and appreciation for black animation, gaming, and comic book creators,” Gifted said.

Here are some highlights that people can expect:

ANIMATION FILM FEST – “At the heart of the festival is the Khem Animation Film Festival (KAFF) and Awards Ceremony, presenting a curated selection of over 20 animated short films from talented creators hailing from every corner of the globe. Expect to be captivated and inspired by the creativity and storytelling prowess on display.”

BLACK WOMEN IN COMICS – “In recognition of the incredible contributions by black women to the comic book industry, Khem Fest will feature a spotlight event titled ‘Black Women in Comics.’ This panel discussion will offer attendees a chance to gain insights and perspectives from leading female voices in the industry.”

ANIME IN HIP-HOP – “For those fascinated by the intersection of anime and hip hop, the ‘Anime in Hip Hop Panel’ promises to be a unique and engaging experience. Participants will explore the cultural intersections and artistic expressions that have shaped these two influential movements this includes special performances by Wu Fam and Tha Gata Negrra.”

VIDEO GAME DEVELOPMENT – “Khem Fest also places a spotlight on the art and craft of video game development. The festival proudly presents a seminar on Video Game Development, inviting renowned industry professionals to share their knowledge and expertise. Attendees will gain a valuable understanding of the intricacies and innovations involved in creating immersive gaming experiences. Furthermore, Khem Fest offers a chance to explore the world of voice acting in animation and video games through an interactive panel. Participants will learn about the complexities and skills required to bring characters to life through voice-over work.

STEAM LAB – “As a celebration of technological innovation, Khem Fest includes a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) lab sponsored by Think Media and Digi2u featuring 3D printing. Attendees can indulge their curiosity and explore the exciting world of 3D printing technology.”
