Labor Day Halfway House Shooting In Newark ‘Not A Random Act,’ Cops Say

Newark police said that one of the victims, a work release inmate, was on the way to his job when the shooting took place.

NEWARK, NJ — Authorities say that a Labor Day double shooting at a Newark halfway house was “not a random act.”

According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, police officers responded to a call of multiple shots fired in the area of Toler Place near the Logan Hall halfway house around 6:45 a.m. on Monday. On arrival, the officers found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds and a parked, gray 2003 four-door Lincoln LS also struck by multiple gunshots.

Police stated that one of the victims, a work release inmate, was on the way to his job when the shooting took place.

The halfway house’s website states that its residents are referred through the New Jersey State Parole Board, the Federal Bureau of Prisons and Union and Essex Counties. The facility provides individual assessments, individual and group counseling, substance abuse treatment, life skills training, educational services and GED testing, family counseling and housing referrals.

Emergency responders transported both victims to an area hospital in stable condition, authorities said.

“This shooting was not a random act,” Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose stated.
