Large Explosion In Newark Under Investigation, Authorities Say
Newark firefighters found several propane tanks at the scene.
NEWARK, NJ — Newark firefighters put out two separate Haz-Mat fires in less than 12 hours on Tuesday.
Both incidents are under investigation by the Newark Fire Division’s Arson Unit, the Newark Department of Public Safety said.
During the first incident, a man was injured in a “large explosion” at 12:05 a.m. after he parked on the 200-block of Johnson Avenue. Emergency responders transported the victim to University Hospital for treatment.

Firefighters located two intact 20-pound propane tanks, typically used for a barbeque grill, and two intact one-pound tanks, often used for a camping grill, inside the victim’s vehicle, a 2007 Honda Odyssey, authorities said.
Officers also observed property damage to nearby vehicles and a church building, authorities said.

CONTAINER FIRE
Firefighters also responded to an outside container fire at 100 Riverside Avenue at 10:14 a.m., which is reportedly the location of a former oil tank company, according to the Newark Department of Public Safety.
The fire, involving a 20,000-gallon storage tank, was considered under control by Newark firefighters at 10:49 a.m., officials said.
Vehicle traffic in the area at Route 21 northbound was temporarily closed and reopened due to the fire, authorities said.
