Live 2026 Election Results For Newark Mayor, City Council

These results were updated at 9:26 p.m. on May 12

NEWARK, NJ — Newark voters went to the polls on Tuesday to elect a mayor and several council members.

The city’s 2026 nonpartisan municipal election took place on May 12. A runoff election between the top two vote-getters will take place on June 9 if no candidate receives a majority in their race.

Here are the latest uncertified results from the Essex County Clerk’s Office (check back for updates, current leaders are in italics):

MAYOR (vote for one; 69.36 percent reported)

• Ras Baraka – 9,903 votes (69.87%)
• Debra Salters – 706 votes (4.98%)
• Douglas Davis – 181 votes (1.28%)
• Jhamar Youngblood – 2,377 votes (16.77%)
• Noble Minton – 235 votes (1.66%)
• Tanisha Garner – 221 votes (1.56%)
• Nasheedah Singleton – 70 votes (0.49%)
• Sheila Montague – 481 votes (3.39%)

CITY COUNCIL AT-LARGE (vote for four; 69.36 percent reported)

• Louise Scott-Rountree – 5,429 votes (12.07%)
• Luis Quintana – 6,294 votes (13.99%)
• C. Lawrence Crump – 5,812 votes (12.92%)
• Donna Jackson – 5,295 votes (11.77%)
• Josephine Garcia – 3,774 votes (8.39%)
• Rasheen Peppers – 3,181 votes (7.07%)
• Altarik White – 2,075 votes (4.61%)
• Lynda Lloyd – 1,982 votes (4.41%)
• Joanette Hinnant – 980 votes (2.18%)

South Ward (vote for one, 100 percent reported)

• Asia Norton – 1,093 votes (23.29%)
• Donald Jackson – 601 votes (12.8%)
• Willie Jetti – 106 votes (2.26%)
• Lonnie Baker – 129 votes (2.75%)
• Abdush Ahmad – 115 votes (2.45%)
• Trenton Jones – 485 votes (10.33%)
• Patrick Council – 2,165 votes (46.12%)

East Ward

• Michael Silva ran unopposed in the East Ward

West Ward (vote for one, 100 percent reported)

• Malcolm X. Outlaw – 706 votes (17.65%)
• Jimmy McCoy – 476 votes (11.9%)
• Muta El-Amin – 453 votes (11.33%)
• Dupre Kelly – 2,365 votes (59.13%)

Central Ward (vote for one, 100 percent reported)

• Amina Bey – 2,338 votes (55.18%)
• Gayle Chaneyfield-Jenkins – 1,899 votes (44.82%)

MAYOR – Ras Baraka faced a challenge from seven candidates in the 2026 mayor race: Debra Salters, Douglas Davis, Jhamar Youngblood, Noble Milton, Tanisha Garner, Nasheedah Singleton, and Sheila Montague.

COUNCIL AT-LARGE – Four at-large city council seats were up for election. A total of 19 candidates ran for at-large seats on the council, including three incumbents: Louise Scott-Rountree, Luis Quintana, and C. Lawrence Crump. The challengers are: Joanette Hinnant, Donna Jackson, Nadirah Brown, Pablo Olivera, Malik Cooper, Yusuf Shabazz, Lamont Vaughn, Rasheen Peppers, Altarik White, Alonzo Herran Jr., Christina Cherry, Maria Lebron, Lynda Lloyd, Khalil Kettles, Josephine Garcia, and Edden Rivera.

COUNCIL WARDS – Fifteen candidates competed for council seats in their respective wards. Michael Silva ran unopposed in the East Ward. The list of other candidates includes: Central Ward: Amina Bey (incumbent), Gayle Chaneyfield-Jenkins / North Ward: Anibal Ramos Jr. (incumbent), Marcos Sanchez / South Ward: Patrick Council (incumbent), Asia Norton, Donald Jackson, Willie Jetti, Lonnie Baker, Abdush Ahmad, Trenton Jones / West Ward: Dupre Kelly (incumbent), Malcolm X.
