NEWARK, NJ — A man assaulted a fellow bus rider last week in Newark, spitting in her face and punching her after an argument, police say.

According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, the assault took place on a NJ Transit bus on Aug. 7. Police released the following statement about the encounter:

“At approximately 1 p.m., the victim and suspect engaged in a verbal altercation while on the bus at Broad Street and Branford Place. The suspect spit in the victim’s face and a physical altercation ensued with the suspect punching the victim in the face. The victim received medical treatment for her injuries at an area hospital.”

Authorities said the suspect is 5 feet 8 inches and 140 pounds. He was wearing a blue shirt and blue sweatpants (see photos below).

Authorities said anyone with information can call the Police Division’s 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477). Anonymous tips can also be made using the Police Division’s website.
