Lyte emerged as one of hip-hop’s pioneering female rappers during the 1980s and has spent much of her career breaking barriers for women in the genre.
According to her representatives, Lyte became the first female rapper to earn a gold single and the first solo female rapper to receive a Grammy nomination. She was also the first rap artist to perform at Carnegie Hall and, in 2006, became the first solo female rapper honored by VH1’s Hip Hop Honors.
Her career has since expanded beyond music into acting, television, directing, producing and entrepreneurship.
Lyte has appeared in projects including Girls Trip, Queen of the South, S.W.A.T. and Power. Behind the camera, she created and executive produced the ALLBLK series Partners in Rhyme and served as an executive producer of Netflix’s Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop.
She is also CEO of Sunni Gyrl, Inc., an entertainment management and production company, and serves on the Kennedy Center’s Hip Hop Culture Council.
Following the Brooklyn kickoff, Lyte will perform in Pittsburgh on Oct. 12 and Philadelphia on Oct. 13 before continuing through several cities.
The tour includes two shows in St. Louis on Oct. 17 and two in Chicago on Oct. 20. It resumes in November with two Atlanta dates before concluding its currently announced schedule in Nashville on Nov. 11.
The tour follows the release of Lyte’s latest album, 1 of 1, and arrives as the rapper celebrates another major recognition in a career spanning more than 40 years.
