Men Carjack Vehicle With Child Inside; Newark Cops Search For Suspects

Newark police said they are searching for two people who carjacked a vehicle outside a T-Mobile store while an 11-year-old girl was inside.

NEWARK, NJ — Newark police are searching for two people who allegedly carjacked a vehicle with an 11-year-old girl inside last week, authorities announced Tuesday.

According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, the carjacking took place at 5:15 p.m. in front of the T-Mobile store at 24 Jones Street. Here’s what happened, authorities said:

“Suspect #1 conspired with Suspect #2 to take the vehicle after the owner, who went into the store, left the vehicle running with her daughter in the backseat. Suspect #1 walked past the store looking at the owner while Suspect # 2 entered the vehicle. When the mother saw Suspect #2 enter her vehicle, she ran from the store and banged on the window as the suspect drove away southbound on Irvine Turner Boulevard. The suspect let the girl out of the vehicle two blocks away at Irvine Turner and West Kinney Street. He fled east on West Kinney, and the vehicle was recovered in a parking lot in the 200 block of that street.”

Newark police released surveillance photos of the suspects (see below). Authorities said Suspect #1 is a male with dreadlocks, who was wearing a black sweater, grey shorts and sandals. Suspect #2 is a male who was wearing grey sweatpants and a black sweater.
