Men Snatch Woman’s Purse In Newark, Point Gun At Witness: Police

A man dragged a woman into the street while stealing her purse. Another man pointed a gun at a bystander who tried to stop them, police say.

NEWARK, NJ — A robbery involving a gun and a purse-snatching took place in Newark on Sunday, authorities said.

The Newark Department of Public Safety released the following statement about the robbery:

“At approximately 6:10 a.m., a woman walking on Ferry Street near Union Street was approached by a male who snatched the victim’s purse. In the process of removing her purse, the suspect dragged the victim into the street where she fell and was injured … A second suspect pointed a handgun at a witness who attempted to intervene. Both suspects fled into a black Mazda SUV at Ferry Street and Union Street.”

Emergency responders transported the injured woman to University Hospital. She is reportedly in stable condition, authorities said Monday.

Detectives are asking for the public’s help identifying three male suspects, and have released surveillance photos taken at the scene (see below).

Police said the first man was thin with a dark skin complexion. He wore a black sweat-jacket, pants and black and white sneakers. The second suspect was thin with a dark skin complexion, and was wearing white sneakers, blue shorts with pants underneath and a black-hooded sweatshirt.

The third suspect, the driver of the black Mazda SUV, did not exit the vehicle, police said.
