The Mercy House Holds Faith & Family Fun Day in Newark
The resource and referral center's first gathering since the pandemic brings together dozens of families for free food and fun.
Newark, N.J. – The Mercy House of the Archdiocese of Newark, a resource and referral center located within the Clinton Hill section of Newark, brought dozens of community members together for free food and entertainment at its first “Faith & Family Fun Day” on July 23.
“Faith & Family Fun Day” marked the first major gathering The Mercy House has held since the COVID-19 pandemic started, so attendees were thrilled to reconnect with friends after more than a year apart. Families and children there enjoyed balloons, face-painting, sack races, a huge bouncy slide, and an ice cream truck that offered free frozen treats.
“We wanted to give something back to the community and just really follow the mission of the Church,” said Cheryl Riley, director of the Archdiocese’s Respect Life Office. “We want people to know that we are here. We’re doing exactly what we’re meant to do. It doesn’t matter what they need. We’re here for them.”

Several archdiocesan staff members and clergy were on-hand to answer questions and discuss The Mercy House’s Catholic mission. Visitors also learned about the work of the resource and referral center, which provides food, clothing, baby supplies, furniture, and help finding work and housing to individuals and families in need. Additionally, The Mercy House offers spiritual support and healing in a faith-filled environment.
