Moving Newark Schools Forward Slate Sweeps 2024 Election

The results are certified for Newark's school board election. The city saw a voter turnout of about 3 percent.

NEWARK, NJ — It’s official: the Moving Newark Schools Forward slate has swept the 2024 board of education election in New Jersey’s largest city.

With all districts reported and results certified, incumbent candidates Dawn Haynes, Helena Vinhas and Vereliz Santana have captured seats on the Newark Board of Education (see full results below).

Another candidate aligned with the slate, Kanileah Anderson, ran unopposed in a special election for an unexpired at-large seat on the board.

The Moving Newark Schools Forward slate was endorsed by Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and North Ward Councilman Anibal Ramos Jr.

In total, Newark saw a voter turnout of about 3.04 percent for the 2024 school board election – which was similar to previous years.

Anderson received 3,332 votes in the unopposed race for the unexpired term, according to results from the Essex County Clerk’s Office. Meanwhile, nine candidates ran for three general seats on the board:

  • Debra Salters – 1,448 votes (11.14%)
  • Vereliz Santana – 2,870 votes (22.07%)
  • Helena Vinhas – 2,874 votes (22.10%)
  • Dawn Y. Haynes – 2,719 votes (20.91%)
  • Sheila Montague – 1,091 votes (8.39%)
  • Latoya Jackson – 819 votes (6.30%)
  • Che J.T. Colter – 394 votes (3.03%)
  • Muta El-Amin – 421 votes (3.24%)
  • Jimmie White – 366 votes (2.81%)
